Fake job offers are among the most common online frauds in India. They target freshers, people switching jobs and anyone hoping for extra income from home.
Eight warning signs
- You are asked to pay for registration, training, a kit, a laptop or “verification”.
- The job is liking videos or rating hotels on WhatsApp or Telegram, and you must deposit money to unlock earnings.
- You get an offer without a proper interview.
- The salary is far higher than normal for the role.
- The recruiter uses a personal email or a domain that only resembles a real company's.
- You are pressured to decide or pay quickly.
- You are asked for OTPs, bank logins or to install a screen-sharing app.
- The company name closely copies a well-known brand.
How to check an offer
- Find the company's official website yourself, not through a link in the message.
- Contact HR through that official website and ask them to confirm the offer.
- Look up the company's registration on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website.
- Search the company and recruiter names with words like “scam” or “fraud”.
